San Juan del Sur is approximately 18 km from the Costa Rican border. It is a quaint fishing village, has a welcoming laid-back atmosphere with surfing beaches to the north and south of town, and hiking trials throughout the surrounding foothills. There is a large Canadian and American expat presence so English is widely spoken. Preferred currency is the Cordoba or USD.
Our Nica-style apartment is located on Nica 16, a block from the ocean. The fully furnished flat has a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. There is a shared courtyard on the main floor and a roof-top patio. The apartment is fully stocked with a coffee maker; kettle; blender; toaster; dishes; glasses etc. Gated windows, doors and ceiling fans allow guest sto take advantage of the breezes typical to the area. New A/C units were installed in the bedrooms in 2023. Electricity is very expensive and to date guests have been paying for their usage. Our property manager is looking for a bed-sofa to add to the apartment

SJDS is four blocks deep from the waterfront/Malecon to the town entrance at the base of the hill, and approximately 10 blocks from north to south. The village is a mix of the old and traditional and the new and evolving. There are Nicaraguan residences, shops, pharmacies, kiosks and small businesses. Tour companies offer trips to all points of interest such as Granda, Masaya, Omnetepe, each with its resident volcano, Pueblos Blancos, Matagalpa, Solentiname Archipelago and Laguna de Apoyo, a crater with stunning views and eco lodges. New commercial convenience stores are popping up.
The beach strip (the Malecon) has a variety of restaurants and colourful street vendors. The newly constructed port and marina is located at the south end of the beach with a seafood market that has a wonderful selection of ceviche and freshly caught fish. The north side of the headland is dominated by the Cristo de la Misericordia, Jesus Statue with spectacular 3600 views.

We are looking forward to 2025 and figuring out what we can make of this new stage of our lives. Generally we are interested in paths less travelled, but are open to exploring any spot we have not seen before. Our preference is for longer term stays so we can become immersed in and experience new areas, but we are truly making this up as we go... so at the moment anything goes.
About us: Adele was a professor, counsellor and organiztion development specialist, while Craig lefet a 30 year career as a auto technician to join his family's business, in the construction industry. He is now retiring and we are working on 2025. We are big into home renovations, DYIs and gardening. Adele has been an amateur photographer and writer since highschool; Craig has always had an interest in music, and as a drummer he still gets together with his band mates. We are both very active and make an effort to stay fit.
We have vacation apartments in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, along with principle residences in Ottawa and Winnipeg. We are very flexible and amenable to a variety of home exchange arrangements. We can usually find availability in San Juan del Sur for anyone who is interested as we have four apartments.
