Whangarei is New Zealand’s most northern city, has a subtropical climate, and is widely known as the “City of 100 Beaches” as it is the hub of a spectacular, pristine coastline. A half hour drive will have you at any of them, ready for an enjoyable day.
Walking and hiking options are also plentiful and popular in our area, and will take you “off the beaten track”, through conservation areas and significant stands of native New Zealand bush, as well as to several walk-in-only beaches. If you are a keen to get out on the water, then a trip out to the world-renowned Poor Knights’ Islands Marine Reserve is an absolute must-do for sightseeing, a spot of world-class diving or snorkeling.
Golf is another popular pastime and with 5 golf courses either in the city or within a half hour drive, there’s plenty of choice and variety to keep you playing for weeks.
An avid arts culture means you’ll find galleries, art houses and museums, boutique stores, and working artists all through our city.

We are an active retired couple (59 and 64 yrs), who enjoy the exploring the outdoors, and new places. Having been involved in the tourism accommodation industry in New Zealand, for over 20 years, we have now handed over the reins and would love to travel some more ourselves. We especially enjoy beaches, bushwalks and smaller places, rather than big cities, in general. Having said that, we have enjoyed seeing the sights of a couple of Europe's large cities. We also like a spot of cycling, skiing and walking, so long as it's not too strenuous!
