Once part of a 19th-century windmill on the edge of Lewes, the house is not overlooked and there are fine views across the town and out to the Sussex Downs. All but one of the rooms, including two studies, look out on the garden. The lane past the back of the house takes you into the countryside in a couple of minutes.

London is 70 minutes away by train, which runs twice an hour.
Lewes is a beautiful old town with a lot of history, 8 miles from Brighton and the south coast. It’s a good area for walking, horse-riding and cycling. Glyndebourne opera-house is nearby. Direct trains to London run twice an hour and take about 70 minutes. Our house is a mile from the station and the town-centre.

There are three of us: I’m a retired writer and lecturer, my wife is Japanese and works as an interpreter and translator, and our 17-year-old daughter is still at school. There’s also a handsome black cat who stays behind when we travel. We’d ask anyone exchanging with us to feed him.
