Over the Christmas and new year period 2022-2023 we, Pete and Dinah, wish to swap our home in Penrith for approx 6-8 weeks staying in Melbourne Australia where our son is currently living. We plan to spend most of our time in Melbourne, but we also want to visit relatives who live in South Australia for a week or so. We would be happy to do a car swap as well.
Our home in a leafy street near the town centre is a fully modernised old barn built in the mid 1800s with 3 floors. On the ground floor there’s a large kitchen diner with open fireplace, a large sitting room with WiFi tv, & both rooms have floor to ceiling windows with garden views. There’s a front door lobby area with space for coats & shoe storage & recycling, also a pleasant open hallway with sitting area and big windows. There’s a bathroom with shower & laundry area. Upstairs on the first floor there’s a large bedroom with a super king bed, Juliet balconies & great views of the town & the Lake District mountains beyond. There is a small desk area on the landing & an airing cupboard which we use for drying clothes. On the top floor there’s a double room & king size bed & Velux windows with superb views. There’s also a very small bedroom which can sleep one or two at a push. There’s a small loo & wash room too. The garden has trees, some planted borders & a small wild area.
Penrith is an ancient town on the NW edge of the Lake District National Park. In the surrounding area are ancient stone circles, castles, beautiful meandering rivers & walks & ancient Roman roads. Our house is 5 mins walk from the town centre which has a beautiful ancient church, plus an interesting variety of shops, cafes, restaurants & pubs as well as a cinema, leisure opportunities at the swimming pool, golf, tennis, cricket & rugby clubs, the Penrith Ramblers and a small museum. There’s also a mainline train station and the M6 motorway is within easy reach. In the wider area Ullswater Lake is 10-15 minutes away by car, where there are boating, wild swimming & great walking opportunities, there are ancient stately homes & gardens to explore and all of the rest of the Lake District beyond. Hadrian’s Wall lies 20 miles north running west/east with excellent museums along its course. The Gretna Green and Scottish border is 25 miles away.
There are a number of golf clubs in our area, one just outside Penrith itself. Also in Carlisle and Silloth (by the sea) and others too. The famous St Andrew’s course is 180miles away (about 3.5 hrs drive away) and can be reached by bus and train too.
